Renton Coffee Shops: 22 Local Spots, Rooms and Windows

Most Renton coffee shops are a window you drive up to, not a room you sit in. That is the first thing to know, and it is not a complaint. Thirteen of the twenty two shops below are stands, several open before five in the morning, and on a Benson Hill arterial at seven that is the difference between stopping and driving on.

The rooms are the other half of the story, and there are better ones here than the reputation suggests. A Turkish bakery in the Highlands. A roastery floor downtown that sources only from African growers. A former gas station in Kennydale that pours wine after dark. A gift shop where the drink board is a map of the neighborhood.

Downtown

Boon Boona Coffee, 724 S 3rd St. This is the roastery floor, not a branch. Efrem Fesaha started the business in 2012 sourcing green Ethiopian coffee after a trip to Asmara, moved into roasting in 2016, and opened this room in 2019 as the company’s first brick and mortar. It sources exclusively from Ethiopia, Rwanda, Burundi, Kenya and other African growers, and everything Boon Boona has become since grew out of this address. Boon Boona Coffee is one of those coffee shops you go into that always has an energy to it. Conversations happening, impromptu meetings, and people working away on their laptops. The vibe is positive and electric. I like to grab one of the seats outside if possible and watch as Renton passes by in front of me.

The Rose Gift House and Coffee, 226 Main Ave S Ste B. The one Renton shop whose drink board is a map of downtown. The Sequim Special is a white chocolate mocha built on lavender from 4 Sisters up the street, and the 3rd Street Vanilla Latte is named for a former owner of Liberty Cafe two blocks away. Katie Newman opened it in October 2020 as a gift shop that happened to serve coffee and let the coffee half grow into the larger one. Both still share one room, so you browse local art and jewelry while your drink is made, and roughly 95 percent of the retail shelf is made in the Pacific Northwest.

Common Ground Coffee and Cupcakes, 900 S 3rd St Ste A. Lange and Heng Woon signed a fifteen year lease on the corner of Third and Wells in 2006, when by their own account downtown Renton was boarded up. Nearly two decades later they are still behind the counter and their two daughters work it with them. Lange spent thirty one years at Boeing. Roughly ten cupcake flavors are baked in house every day, all buttercream.

Liberty Cafe, 926 S 3rd St. A narrow slip of building between a tattoo shop and a bar, held since 2009. The founders did the floors, bar, paint and wiring themselves to keep the rent survivable, and sixteen years later the room still reads that way: a bar along the window onto downtown, wheeled booths, two small couches, board games, books and rotating art. Check the hours before you go. It is closed Mondays and does not open until 10.

The Highlands

Hasel Cafe, 960 Harrington Ave NE. A Turkish bakery first and a coffee shop second, and the pastry case is where that shows: three kinds of borek beside baklava, Turkish delight, mussel cookies and a San Sebastian cheesecake, with tres leches in raspberry, pistachio and caramel. Breakfast means Turkish eggs until 2 PM. It stays open until 8 PM most nights, which is late for coffee in Renton and makes it one of only two rooms on this list you can use after dinner.

Refuel Cafe, 401 Olympia Ave NE Ste 102. Opened on Black Friday 2019 by a Seattle transplant who missed having a third place, and the room is still built for that: plenty of seating, vining plants, board games on the shelf, black ceramic mugs for drinking in and compostable cups if you are not. The coffee is Fulcrum and the pastries are Macrina, which is the cleanest sourcing on this list.

Redondo Coffee and Crepes, 919 Harrington Ave NE. A creperie with a Mexican accent on the espresso board, and the two halves are equally the point. Jesus Alvarez runs it, Spanish and English are both spoken across the counter, and the menu reads accordingly. The Horchata Latte is built on a horchata base with your choice of milk, a Mexican mocha sits next to it, and the crepes are made to order in front of you.

BeanWater Espresso, 4044 NE Sunset Blvd. A drive up window that is also the home base of a small coffee fleet. Three mobile units run every day and pour at Pacific Raceway in Kent, and the City of Renton describes the operation as mobile trucks, stadium stands and this stop on Sunset. Plenty of people meet BeanWater somewhere other than Renton and then come looking for the permanent window.

North Renton and Kennydale

Woods Coffee Renton, 151 Sunset Blvd N. Woods opened this store on July 6, 2026 and set it up for the commute rather than the mall. Of the two dozen Woods locations trading today, only eight stay open past 6 PM and only four in King County have a drive through. Renton is on both lists, which makes it a different proposition from the Bellevue Square and Lincoln Square stores that keep shopping center hours. It opens at 4:30 AM on weekdays and runs to 8 PM, and there is a fireplace inside for anyone staying.

Gourmet Latte, 350 Sunset Blvd N. Most chains you meet in Renton are headquartered somewhere else. This one is not. The business filing for Gourmet Latte Inc gives its address as 350 Sunset Boulevard North, the same lot as this stand, so a company running more than twenty windows across Washington and two in Florida is being run from the window you are ordering at.

Mighty Mugs Coffee, 600 Park Ave N. Jenessa Pettit worked as a barista at the Mighty Mugs stand in Kent from the age of nineteen, and in 2010 she sold her 1971 Chevy and bought it. She is a nurse and a Highline College instructor alongside running it, and Highline named her its Distinguished Alumna in 2025. This is also the stand that changed its own company’s policy: its part in Renton’s Bring Your Own Cup program led her to extend personal cup discounts across every Mighty Mugs location. The window opens around 4 AM on weekdays, the earliest on this list.

Filling Station Coffee and Bistro, 1302 N 30th St. The name is literal. The building pumped gas before it poured coffee, and the conversion kept the deep forecourt, which is now a patio with real room to spread out. It opened in July 2024, pours coffee in the morning and its own private label wine at night, and runs taco dinner service Thursday through Saturday. One block off I-405 Exit 6, and it stops feeling like a roadside stop the moment you are in it.

TRA Viet Coffee and Tea, 1133 Lake Washington Blvd N Ste 83. The sealed can is the signature move. A machine crimps an aluminum pop top onto a clear vessel so you can see the layers of Vietnamese coffee before you crack it open, and the drink is canned to order rather than poured into a cup. It runs about fifty cents over the standard cup and it is the reason people photograph the order. A few minutes on foot from Gene Coulon Memorial Beach Park.

The Valley

Candor Coffee, 200 SW 43rd St. Most coffee on the SW 43rd corridor is a window you drive up to. Candor is the opposite, and the size is the point: the main room seats enough people that they rent it out for gatherings of up to a hundred, which no other coffee shop in Renton is set up to do. The beans are Olympia Coffee blends, the kitchen turns out crepes and salmon toast all day, and there is a lot, live plants throughout, free wifi, step free access and gender neutral restrooms.

Benson Hill

Black Bear Coffee Company, Benson Hill. The City of Renton’s own tourism office describes it as a double sided coffee drive through, easy to access from both sides, and that is the practical reason to know about it. Two lanes means two queues, and on a Benson Hill arterial at seven in the morning that is the difference between stopping and driving on. It opens at 4:30 in the morning on weekdays and bakes its own ciabatta for the sandwiches. The honest counterweight is the lot, which more than one regular calls awkward.

Benson Espresso, 2000 Benson Rd S. Most Renton espresso stands are shut by mid afternoon. Benson runs to 6:30 on weekdays, which makes it one of the only windows on this side of the city you can still use on the way home. It also runs a drive through and a walk up at once: a customer who used the walk up described a single barista serving both channels and not letting it slow her down.

East Renton Highlands and the Maple Valley Highway

Rainier Valley Coffee, East Renton Highlands. The drink board is the reason to pull in. Rainier Valley runs a line called the Signature Trailblazers and every one is named for somewhere in Washington: The Rainier, Mount Si, Snoqualmie, White Pass, Enchantments, Skyline, Evergreen, Crystal Freeze, Rattle Snake, Wonder Land and Sunrise. The Rainier is white chocolate, coconut and vanilla. The window is open fourteen hours a day on weekdays.

Huxdotter Coffee Renton, 3404 Maple Valley Hwy. The Renton outpost of a North Bend company pouring coffee since 1990, when it started as Cascade Espresso, a cart outside what is now the Ace Hardware in North Bend. The name is Swedish for daughter of Hux. The Twin Peaks latte is the piece of that history you can taste, honey and lavender, a nod to the show filmed around the company’s hometown, and the drink their own menu calls the one people have driven across the state for. Sorrento’s Coffee, 5301 NE 4th St. Kolaches are not standard Washington espresso stand food, and Sorrento’s gives them three sections of its menu: egg, meat and savory. Tacos sit next to them. Between that and a baked goods list running to Blazin’ Bagels and Macrina pastries, this is a stand doing considerably more with a small window than most of its neighbors attempt. The chai is made from scratch and sold by the bag to take home.

Cedar River Espresso, 16402 SE 128th St. A stand rather than a cafe, and it does not pretend otherwise. A customer put it best: no frills coffee stand, friendly barista, drive through for convenience. What it has instead of atmosphere is an opening time. It opens at 4:30 in the morning, seven days a week, and pours Caffe D’Arte. If you are heading east out of Renton before dawn this is one of very few windows already lit.

Cascade and Fairwood

There Ya Go Espresso, 14516 SE Petrovitsky Rd. Five in the morning is the fact to hold onto. There Ya Go has opened at 5 AM on weekdays for at least ten years, the same time appears on every current listing and on a local write up from 2016, and it closes at six in the evening. On a stretch of Petrovitsky Road where the alternatives start considerably later, that is the whole proposition. The specials board turns over every month.

Double Wired Espresso, 10622 SE Carr Rd. A Vietnamese deli hiding inside an espresso stand. The espresso is real but it is not the point: the banh mi list runs to sixteen numbered options, from roast pork and grilled chicken through a cold cut combo, and there is a proper Vietnamese iced coffee, bubble tea and fresh made pastries. A drive through window you can order all of it from, which is not a combination Renton offers anywhere else.

Before You Go

Renton wakes up early and shuts early, and both halves catch people out.

The early windows: Mighty Mugs on Park Avenue opens around 4 AM on weekdays. Black Bear, Cedar River and the Woods on Sunset all open at 4:30. There Ya Go and Benson open at 5. If you have a shift starting before dawn anywhere on this side of the lake, you are covered.

The evening is the thin part. Most of the stands are shut by mid afternoon and most of the rooms close with them. If you want coffee in Renton after six, the list is short: Hasel until 8, the Woods on Sunset until 8, and Benson Espresso until 6:30. The Filling Station is the other evening option, though by then you are drinking their wine and eating tacos rather than ordering a cortado.

Two more things. Liberty is closed Mondays and opens at 10, which is later than anything else downtown. And downtown parking on South 3rd is easier than it looks, which is the opposite of the problem most Washington coffee streets have.
