Discover The Best Coffee In Washington State
Coffee is big in Washington State. The oldest working Probat roaster on the planet fire roasts beans in Yacolt, a small town in the Clark County woods. The largest coffee chain in the world started in a storefront near Pike Place Market. Both of those are ours.
Seattle gets the majority of the publicity and rightfully so. Coffee culture surges through that city like a double shot of espresso, and it is hard to walk a block downtown without passing another shop. What you may not know is how much is happening everywhere else.
Twisp has a roaster that Roast Magazine voted one of the top three micro roasters in North America. Bargreen’s Coffee has been roasting in Everett since 1898, seventy three years before the first Starbucks opened. Bellingham has a Roaster of the Year. Spokane, Tacoma, Olympia, Vancouver and the Tri-Cities all have scenes worth a morning of your time.
Then there are the stands. The espresso cart was invented here, under the monorail at Westlake in 1980, and the drive through huts followed. Even in the most rural corners of this state it is hard to go ten miles without finding a place to grab a cup. If you would rather sit down with yours, you are spoiled for choice. Some places even serve decaf.
Several years ago I took on a project to visit one hundred coffee shops in one hundred days. That content is long gone, but the habit stuck, and that project is the genesis of this directory. Everything on this page comes from someone who has actually sat in these shops.
