North Renton, Renton, Washington
The Renton stand that changed its own company's policy. Its part in the city's Bring Your Own Cup program led the owner to extend personal cup discounts across every Mighty Mugs location, and the window opens around 4 AM on weekdays.
Jenessa Pettit worked as a barista at the Mighty Mugs stand in Kent from the age of nineteen, and in 2010 she sold her 1971 Chevy and bought it. The brand is older than her ownership of it, but the business as it runs today is hers, and she is a nurse and a Highline College instructor alongside it. Highline named her its Distinguished Alumna in 2025, the college's most senior alumni honor.
The Renton stand punches above its size on one specific thing. It joined the City of Renton's Bring Your Own Cup program, and that participation is what prompted Mighty Mugs to extend personal cup discounts across all of its locations. Barista Magazine covered the campaign in its December 2025 issue and quoted Pettit: we are all in this together, the less single use waste the better for our city.
The coffee is described only as locally roasted and shade grown, and no source names the roaster, so that is as far as it goes. What people order and name is food more than drinks: an everything bagel with jalapeno cream cheese, a breakfast burrito, muffins and Modern Oats oatmeal cups. There is a kids menu, and the specials board rotates rather than holding a fixed house drink.
It is a small stand on the corner of Park Avenue North with a drive through on one side and a walk up window on the other, and baristas work both at once. Four locations are open now, in Renton, Kent, Burien and West Seattle, down from a peak of eight. The weekday open is around 4 AM, the earliest of the four, though the shop's own hours and Google differ by a quarter of an hour.
