May is the rare month where Washington rewards travelers who pay attention. The Cascades are still white above 4,000 feet, but the foothills are exploding green. Orchard towns on the east side have been in the 70s for weeks. The coast is quiet, the ferries aren’t full yet, and you can still get a campsite without booking six months out.
Memorial Day weekend changes that calculus fast. But the first three weeks of May? One of the best kept seasonal windows in the Pacific Northwest.
Whidbey, Vashon, and the San Juans hit their stride in May. The summer ferry crush hasn’t started. Rhododendrons are peak. Wildlife is active, whale watching season opens in the San Juans, and you can actually get a table at the restaurants the locals love.
If you want moody and gorgeous, this is your month. The Hoh Rain Forest is dripping green and nearly empty. The coast is wild and uncrowded. Olympic National Park fees apply but crowds don’t. Hurricane Ridge is still snow covered, which means the summit views are dramatic and the parking lot isn’t chaos.
Wenatchee’s apple orchards are in late bloom. Walla Walla’s wine country is pouring again after winter. Leavenworth has its Maifest going. Eastern Washington in May is the open secret for everyone tired of the west side drizzle. You’ll find the same Washington landscape for half the crowd.

North Cascades Highway reopens in mid to late April most years. Trails below 3,000 feet are accessible and often spectacular with snowmelt waterfalls. Above that, expect snow and plan accordingly. Mount Rainier’s Paradise area is open but covered in snow, making for some of the year’s most dramatic views without summer’s timed entry pressure.

Elevation determines everything in May. Here’s what’s actually accessible this month, and what still requires microspikes or patience.
<p>Trails below 2,500 ft are fully accessible. Expect mud in shaded spots but generally excellent conditions. Wildflowers at lower elevations are at or near peak in early May.</p>
<p>Snowpack varies year to year. Most mid-elevation trails open by late May. Check trail reports on the WTA before heading out. Traction devices recommended for anything above 3,000 ft through mid-May.</p>
<p>Typically snow covered through May. The road opens for day use when conditions allow. Check the Olympic NP road status line before making the drive up. Views are spectacular when it’s open.</p>
<p>Paradise is open for day use but snowfield walking only. Carbon River and Mowich Lake areas are accessible on foot. Timed entry for vehicles begins in late May most years. Check NPS before you go.</p>
State park reservation windows open March 1 for summer dates. North Cascades Highway typically reopens in mid to late April This year we do not know when it will open due to extensive damage to the roads.. Mount Rainier opens. WSF ferry schedules shift to summer service on Memorial Day weekend. Deception Pass and Fort Worden remain open year round. No day pass required for most state park trails, though some facilities remain closed until May 15.
Most people think wildflowers and head to Rainier. But late May in the Palouse is one of the state’s most photogenic windows: rolling wheat fields at their first green before summer turns them gold, almost zero crowds, and the kind of landscape that stops you mid-drive. Steptoe Butte at sunrise in late May is as good as Washington gets. We mean that.
May is one of the last months where cabin and vacation rental availability is still good across the state. The Memorial Day window goes fast.
Kitsap Peninsula, Whidbey Island, and the Olympic Peninsula have solid cabin inventory in May. Book by mid-April for Memorial Day weekend.
Wine country and orchard region cabins are in high demand in May. Walla Walla and Wenatchee book up quickly around festival weekends.

Yes. May is one of the best months to visit Washington if you want mild crowds and great conditions. The west side is lush and green, the east side is already warm, and most parks and attractions are open. Memorial Day weekend is the one exception — that fills up fast.
It depends on which side of the Cascades you’re on. West of the mountains, expect temperatures in the upper 50s to mid-60s with frequent rain and green, vivid scenery. East of the mountains (Wenatchee, Yakima, Spokane, Walla Walla) temperatures reach the high 60s to low 80s with mostly sunny skies.
Most state parks are open year-round, including Deception Pass and Fort Worden. Day passes are required for vehicle entry at many parks. Some campground facilities remain closed until mid-May. State park campsite reservations for summer dates open March 1 — book early.
