Course Overview

Maplewood began as a dairy farm. Bill Orton turned his meadows into a golf course that opened on August 27, 1927, and the sandy loam under the fairways is silt the Cedar River laid down long before anyone swung a club here. The early years were rocky: the property split into two separate clubs before they were combined as Maplewood Golf Club in December 1932. In 1945 a group of ten local golfers bought the course to keep it open, and the City of Renton purchased it in 1985. Very little of Al Smith’s original 1927 routing survives, so what you play today is a modern municipal layout on some of the oldest golf ground in the area.

The card is balanced: four par 3s, four par 5s and ten par 4s, with par 36 on each side. At 6,102 yards from the Blue tees it is not long by modern standards, and nine of the ten par 4s play between 309 and 381 yards. Scoring here comes from placing tee shots so you are hitting a full wedge or short iron into the shorter par 4s, and from the par 5s, three of which play under 520 yards from the back tees. The White and Red tees shorten the course to 5,669 and 5,088 yards, which makes Maplewood a comfortable walk for newer and returning golfers.

Hole by Hole Highlights

Yardages are from the Blue tees.

  • Hole 1, 320 yards, par 4: A short opener. Pick the tee club that leaves your favorite full wedge number.
  • Hole 5, 491 yards, par 5: The first par 5 and an early birdie chance for longer hitters.
  • Hole 7, 562 yards, par 5: The longest hole on the course. Plan it as a three shot hole and keep the layup in play.
  • Hole 11, 405 yards, par 4: The only par 4 over 400 yards, so a solid drive matters most here.
  • Hole 12, 177 yards, par 3: The longest of the four par 3s. Take enough club to reach the middle of the green.
  • Hole 14, 139 yards, par 3: The shortest hole on the card and a real chance to pick up a stroke.
  • Hole 15, 451 yards, par 5: The shortest par 5 and the best chance on the course to reach a green in two.
  • Hole 18, 309 yards, par 4: A short closer that rewards a controlled tee shot over a big one.

Amenities and Practice

The driving range is one of Maplewood’s best assets: 30 covered stations that are lit and heated, with target greens so you can check real carry numbers. A small bucket is $7 for 25 balls, a medium is $12 for 60, and a large is $15 for 100. Rechargeable range cards add bonus value, from a $50 card that loads $65 up to a $300 card that loads $450. The full service pro shop runs PGA lessons, starting at $65 for a half hour, $95 for an hour and $45 for a junior half hour, with lesson series and group rates too. Rental clubs are $35 for a regular set and $65 for a premium set, and pull carts are $8.

Food and Beverage

River Rock Grill is the restaurant at Maplewood. It serves breakfast, lunch and dinner with a full bar and a patio, and it books private parties and banquets. Call (425) 430-0311 for reservations and events.

How to Score Here

  • Treat the short par 4s as wedge holes. Choose the tee club that leaves a full swing, not the one that goes farthest.
  • Attack hole 15, the shortest par 5, and play hole 7 in three.
  • The four par 3s run 139 to 177 yards, so a dialed in short and mid iron game covers every one of them.
  • Warm up on the covered range first. It is lit and heated, which makes it useful on cold or wet mornings.

Final Word

Maplewood is a city course with almost a century of golf behind it: fair green fees, a year round practice setup and a real restaurant waiting at the end of the round.
