Scottish Highland Games in Enumclaw

The Seattle Scottish Highland Games Association was formed back in 1947. A local group of Scots wanted to create a group whose mission included “keeping their ethnic origin alive as well as stimulating an interest in Scottish Highland Games through Scottish dancing, piping, drumming and athletic competition.”

What Are Highland Games?

Traditionally in Scotland, the Highland Games are a mixture of sports such as dance, tug-o-war, caber toss and track & field. Also included were cultural favorites like the bagpipe music, parades and food. And you can’t forget about the kilts…

The games have been taking place in some shape or form since the 11th century. Originally designed to test each clan and its members, it’s secondary purpose was to keep Kings, Queens and Clan Chiefs entertained.

2018 will be the 71st Annual Games and Gathering, which makes it the 6th oldest continuous Highland Games in the USA. On July 28th and 29th, visitors can expect a whole array of events and activities.

Events

One of the beloved annual ceremonies is the Celtic Kennel! Everything from Kerry Blue Terriers to Irish Wolfhounds and Collies will be at the show looking to win awards.

And just like in the tradition of native Scots, you’ll also be surrounded by tug-of-war, bagpipes and Highland dancing.

The Seattle Knights will also be preforming at various times throughout the festival.

All other events are “to be scheduled,” so make sure to keep an eye on their events page.
