Leah Rankin: Seattle Women’s Hockey Club
Seattle based Leah Rankin, president of the Seattle Women’s Hockey Club, is our guest for this episode.
Leah grew up in Washington DC, studied engineering at Purdue and came west for graduate school at the University of Washington, where she now works with the School of Social Work. She picked up hockey after grad school in an adult learn to play class at Sno-King Ice Arena in Renton, where she was the only woman in the class.
She explains how the club works, from its free Give Hockey a Try day and a women only learn to play program to beginner, intermediate and advanced divisions, all with coached practices at the Kraken Community Iceplex in Northgate. The club is volunteer run and works to keep the sport affordable with a gear rental program built on donations, sponsor deals and fundraising.
Leah talks about games against the Rainier Women’s Hockey League in Tacoma, the Everett Ravens and the new UW women’s club team, plans for a broader statewide women’s league, and the club’s own team tournament, Puck Place Market. Her favorite place to play is the outdoor rink in Winthrop.
Off the ice she mountain bikes on Tiger Mountain, at Stevens Pass and around Leavenworth. Her coffee pick is Visible Coffee Roasters in Kirkland, for good coffee, a calm room and reliable WiFi.
