About This Course: Relaxed mountain golf just off I-90 in Cle Elum

Sun Country Golf Course sits just off I-90 at exit 78 near Cle Elum, about 90 minutes east of downtown Seattle. It is a par 71 public eighteen that plays 5,507 yards from the Yellow tees, worth the drive for the Cascade Mountain setting and a laid back pace that suits families, couples and weekend groups.

The course has been under private ownership since around 2004 and plays from mid April to mid October, weather permitting. Stay for a burger at The 9 Iron Bar & Grill, or park the RV overnight at the course’s RV park and play again in the morning.

Course Overview

Sun Country opened in 1973 as a 9 hole course designed by J. Gaylord Riach, according to the ForeTee course guide. The Discover Cle Elum visitor site says new owners took over around 2004 and added nine more holes, along with home sites around the course, and ForeTee dates the John Steidel expansion to 2009. The course describes itself as an affordable, relaxing round with some of the most breathtaking views in Eastern Washington, and its website carries a 2022 GolfAdvisor Golfers’ Choice badge naming it among the best courses in Washington.

At 5,507 yards from the Yellow tees, this is a short course by modern standards, and the card rewards accuracy over length. Eleven of the eighteen holes are par 4s, running from 258 to 431 yards, and two of the three par 5s play under 420 yards. The four par 3s run 120 to 197 yards. The Green and Red tees shorten it to 5,266 and 4,711 yards, a comfortable round for newer golfers and juniors.

• Hole 1, 415 yards, par 5: A short par 5 to open, and the diagram shows it bending left. A good drive puts the green in range for longer hitters.
• Hole 4, 323 yards, par 4: A pond sits short and left of the green, so favor the right side with your approach.
• Hole 8, 339 yards, par 4: Water crosses in front of the green. Take enough club to carry it.
• Hole 9, 120 yards, par 3: The shortest hole on the course and a real birdie chance.
• Hole 11, 365 yards, par 5: The shortest par 5 on the card. Two solid shots can get you home.
• Hole 13, 289 yards, par 4: A short par 4 with a pond guarding the left front of the green.
• Hole 16, 481 yards, par 5: The longest hole on the course. Plan it as a three shot hole.
• Hole 17, 431 yards, par 4: The longest par 4, and it plays as a par 5 for women. A solid drive matters most here.

Amenities and Practice

The golf shop handles tee times, carts and memberships at 509-674-2226. Regulars have options: the 2026 membership sheet lists singles and couples memberships for anytime or weekday play, an anytime 18 hole punch card good for 10 rounds at $660 plus tax, a weekday punch card at $490 plus tax, and a 10 round cart rental punch card at $195 plus tax. The punch cards expire at the end of the 2026 season. Marathon Mondays turn a Monday tee time into unlimited golf for the day.

Juniors can play through Youth on Course, which WA Golf lists as valid Monday through Thursday anytime and Friday through Sunday after 1 p.m. The RV park on site has 50 amp sites and showers. The course website does not describe a driving range, lessons or rental clubs, so call the golf shop before you count on any of them.

Food and Drink

The 9 Iron Bar & Grill opened at Sun Country in 2022 and serves golfers, visitors and locals. The menu runs to burgers, steaks, salmon, fish and chips, salads and prime rib dips, with prime rib on Friday nights, happy hour in the late afternoon, sports on the big screens and bingo on Wednesdays. It takes table reservations, caters, and hosts parties and golf tournaments with indoor and outdoor seating. It is closed Tuesdays in spring and summer. Call (509) 674-7028.

Rates, Tee Times and Local Tips

Sun Country does not post a rate sheet, so these are the prices its online tee sheet showed for September 30 through October 3, 2026, late in the season. On Wednesday and Thursday, 18 holes were $52.15, dropping to $35.13 from 3 p.m., and 9 holes on Thursday were $35.13. Friday through Sunday, 18 holes were $65.77, with some late afternoon Friday and Sunday times at $55.56, and 9 holes on Saturday were $46.48. The cart rate was $23.84 for 18 holes and $19.86 for 9. Prices change by day and time, and flash deals for foursomes show up now and then, so check the tee sheet for your date.

Book through Sun Country’s online tee sheet or call the golf shop at 509-674-2226. Two club days are worth knowing about: the men’s club plays Thursdays with a 9:00 a.m. shotgun start, and the ladies club plays Wednesday mornings, both from mid April to mid October.

Make a weekend of it. Sun Country is a short drive from downtown Cle Elum and historic Roslyn, and Lake Easton State Park sits farther west along I-90 for camping and time on the water. If you want a second round, the two Suncadia courses, Prospector and Rope Rider, are close by.

How to Score Here

• Position beats distance. At 5,507 yards, a fairway club off the tee often leaves a short approach with less risk.
• Attack the two short par 5s, hole 1 at 415 yards and hole 11 at 365, where a par should be the minimum target.
• Look at the hole diagrams on the course website before you play. Water sits near the green on holes 4, 8 and 13.
• Save something for the finish: hole 17 is the longest par 4 at 431 yards, and hole 18 is the longest par 3 at 197.
