About This Course: A Cliff Top Opener Over Latah Creek

The Creek at Qualchan Golf Course is the City of Spokane’s municipal course on Meadowlane Road, and the reason to make the drive is the first tee shot. Visit Spokane describes hole 1 as an elevated par 4 where you tee off a cliff edge and carry Latah Creek to a fairway about 100 feet below. From there the creek keeps winding through the round, with five ponds, wooded and hilly ground and well protected greens.

It is an 18 hole, par 72 course that plays 6,559 yards from the Blue tees, with four sets of tees and a driving range. The city calls it Spokane’s newest golf course and a sanctuary for many species of birds and wildlife. In 2026, 18 holes cost $57 and nine holes cost $41, taxes included.

Course Overview

Top 100 Golf Courses credits the design to Bill Robinson and says the course debuted in 1993; GolfPass lists 1992 as the year it was built and also credits John F. Robinson. Qualchan is one of four courses the City of Spokane runs, alongside Indian Canyon, Downriver and Esmeralda. The city says its golf program is an enterprise fund that uses no tax dollars, and it replaced the irrigation pump station at Qualchan in winter 2024.

Top 100 Golf Courses describes tree lined fairways laid out on hilly terrain, where a small stream and a handful of ponds come into play, and the city’s February 2026 season opening notice calls it modern, target style golf. Both nines play to par 36. The two front nine par 5s run 537 and 571 yards, and the four par 3s range from 142 yards at hole 7 to 223 yards at hole 4. Low scores are possible: in April 2012, Spokane’s daily newspaper reported that Corey Prugh set a Qualchan course record of 61 from the white tees, playing the last three holes in 4 under.

Yardages are from the Blue tees on the GolfPass scorecard, which adds up to 6,599 yards. The city now lists the Blue tees at 6,559, so a hole or two may play slightly shorter than shown.

• Hole 1, 359 yards, par 4: The signature tee shot. Visit Spokane describes an elevated tee on a cliff edge, a carry over Latah Creek to a fairway about 100 feet below, and four bunkers protecting the fairway.
• Hole 2, 398 yards, par 4: The number 1 handicap hole for men, right after the opener. A par here is a good score.
• Hole 4, 223 yards, par 3: The longest par 3 on the course, which Visit Spokane singles out as a long par 3. Expect a hybrid or long iron.
• Hole 5, 571 yards, par 5: The longest hole and the number 3 handicap. Plan on three full shots.
• Hole 7, 142 yards, par 3: The shortest hole on the card and a real birdie chance.
• Hole 12, 450 yards, par 4: The longest par 4 and the number 2 handicap. Qualchan pro Mark Gardner told the same newspaper in 2012 that holes 10 through 12 are “real crucial holes.”
• Hole 16, 503 yards, par 5: The shortest par 5 on the course. Prugh made eagle here during his record 61.
• Hole 18, 504 yards, par 5: The finisher. Prugh reached it in two in 2012, so a good drive gives you a look at birdie.

Amenities and Practice

The city’s February 2026 season opening notice said carts would be allowed and the driving range would be open. The city offers professional instruction year round at all four of its courses, but the lessons page does not post instructors or prices, so call the course at 509-448-9317 to set up a lesson. Juniors play for $20 for 9 or 18 holes, and the city runs junior golf programs. If you bring your own cart, a daily private cart license is $20 and an annual license is $400.

Food and Drink

The city’s February 2026 season opening notice said the restaurant at Qualchan would be open, but the city’s course page does not name it or post hours. Call the course before you plan a meal around your round.

Rates, Tee Times and Local Tips

These are the City of Spokane’s 2026 rates, read from the city’s fees page and 2026 rate sheet on October 8, 2026. They apply at all four city courses and include sales tax, admissions tax and the facility improvement fee. Eighteen holes are $57 any day and nine holes are $41, but there is no nine hole rate until after 1 p.m. Friday through Sunday. The sunset rate is $35, and an 18 hole tee time booked outside the standard seven day window costs $80. Regular players can buy an $80 Players Pass, which drops 18 holes to $47, nine holes to $38 and senior 18 holes to $45. Active duty and retired military golfers get discounts with military ID.

How to Score Here

• Commit on the first tee. The carry over Latah Creek from the elevated tee is the shot you will remember, so pick a club that clears it comfortably.
• Score on the short par 3s, hole 7 at 142 yards and hole 14 at 170 yards.
• Treat holes 2 and 12, the two hardest on the card, as par holes and accept a bogey.
• Save something for the finish. Two par 5s close out the round at 16 and 18, both just over 500 yards from the Blue tees.
