Newaukum Valley Golf Club sits just south of Chehalis with 27 holes of golf along the Newaukum River, and the reason to make the drive is choice: three nines with their own character, a full sized range and a clubhouse grill with a view of the course. The club says all three nines are playable for beginners while still challenging lower handicaps, and it bills itself as welcoming and family friendly.
The course’s own scorecard pairs the South and East nines, which play to par 72 and 6,307 yards from the Blue tees. The West nine, which the club calls the shortest of the three, rounds out the 27.

GolfPass lists the South and East nines as opening in 1979 and credits the design to John H. Date and Henry M. Date. In August 2019, Will Rubin of The Chronicle reported that Newaukum Ventures LLC, owned by Joseph Enbody and Trevor Westlund, had bought the golf course and its associated properties that May from John Date for $3.125 million, according to the Lewis County Assessor’s Office. The new owners hired Gerald Waring to revamp the restaurant and reopened the back bar area.
The club describes each nine differently. The South Nine borders the Newaukum River and mixes rolling hills, large trees and strategic bunkering, and the club says it challenges even the best golfer. The East Nine is more open and forgiving, but you will need to steer clear of numerous water hazards. The West Nine is the shortest, and its tree lined fairways put a premium on shotmaking and accuracy. On the scorecard, the South Nine carries back to back par 5s at 6 and 7 that add up to 1,086 yards, while the East Nine packs three par 5s and three par 3s into 3,016 yards.
Yardages are from the Blue tees on the course’s own scorecard, which numbers the South Nine 1 to 9 and the East Nine 10 to 18.
The club pairs its three nines with a full sized driving range and two putting and chipping greens. Range buckets are $8 for a small bucket of 40 balls and $14 for a large bucket of 80 balls. Carts are $14 for 9 holes and $19 for 18.
Newaukum Valley has Men’s and Women’s Clubs with member discounts and club tournaments, plus twilight league play on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. The club also hosts tournaments, fundraisers, corporate outings, buddy trips and weddings, for groups of 12 to 200, with catering available.
The Grill sits at the heart of the clubhouse, with views over the course toward the river. From April to October it is open Tuesday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; from November to March it is open Wednesday through Sunday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The menu runs from spinach artichoke dip, wings and flatbreads to a French dip, a bacon cheeseburger, grilled tacos and the Grilled NEWK Dog with cream cheese, caramelized onions and jalapeños. The bar pours golf themed cocktails such as the Fairway Fizz and the Mulligan Mixer.
