About This Course: Open Fairways and Real Wind North of Spokane

Deer Park Golf Club is an 18 hole public course on North Country Club Drive in Deer Park, a short drive north of Spokane, and the reason to make the trip is a links style par 72 that stretches to 6,751 yards and lets the wind decide how long it plays. The course calls its fairways generous, but ponds, a creek, fescue and waste bunkers sit close enough to punish a careless swing, and three of the four par 3s ask for a tee shot over water.

Three sets of tees run from 5,549 to 6,751 yards. Add a real grass driving range, a pro shop with club fitting, PGA instruction and Divot’s Bar and Grill in the clubhouse, and you have a full day of golf at public course prices.

Course Overview

Deer Park Golf Club opened in 1996, and General Manager Craig Schuh, a PGA professional, has been part of the operation since that first season. Course directories including GolfPass list Keith Hellstrom as the architect. The course calls itself links inspired, with wide fairways set against mountain views.

The card holds four par 5s, four par 3s and ten par 4s. The front nine plays 3,337 yards from the Blue tees and the back nine 3,414. The course moves tee markers regularly, so expect yardages to vary from day to day, and check the local rules on the scorecard for how its waste bunkers play. Summer brings firmer ground and more rollout. The target pace is about four hours and 15 minutes.

Hole by Hole Highlights

Yardages are from the Blue tees, from the course’s own scorecard; hole notes follow the course’s own hole by hole guide.

  • Hole 1, 398 yards, par 4: A sharp dogleg left with trees, out of bounds and a large waste bunker, and the driving range down the right. The green has two tiers and slopes from back to front.
  • Hole 4, 178 yards, par 3: The first par 3. A pond guards the left side from tee to green, and a creek behind the back left catches anything long.
  • Hole 6, 538 yards, par 5: The longest hole on the course and the number 3 handicap. It often plays into the wind, so plan on three shots.
  • Hole 8, 127 yards, par 3: The shortest hole, but the tee shot carries water to a sharply sloped green with several tiers, and a pond guards much of the right side.
  • Hole 9, 428 yards, par 4: The number 1 handicap hole. It often plays straight into the prevailing wind, with out of bounds and a waste bunker left.
  • Hole 14, 416 yards, par 4: The signature hole and the number 2 handicap. A dogleg left with a creek along the left side that crosses near the corner, and a pond guarding a heavily contoured green.
  • Hole 17, 514 yards, par 5: The risk and reward hole. You can take the second shot over water or lay up left.
  • Hole 18, 450 yards, par 4: The longest par 4 closes the round, with out of bounds and a waste bunker left and a green with several tiers.

Amenities and Practice

The driving range is real grass. A small bucket is $8, a medium is $11.50 and a large is $14, and the putting and chipping greens sit nearby. The pro shop handles custom fitting, regrips, reshafting and loft and lie adjustments.

Craig Schuh, Head Professional Matt Nosbaum and Assistant Professional Chance Moseley each teach a 45 minute private lesson for $100, booked directly with the instructor. Matt and Chance sell packages of four lessons for $380 and six for $500, and a 60 minute group lesson for up to three people is $150.

In winter, the TrackMan indoor simulator runs $50 an hour for up to four players.

Food and Drink

Divot’s Bar and Grill sits in the clubhouse with patio seating. Breakfast runs until 11 a.m., then the menu moves to burgers, wraps, salads and baskets, with beer and cocktails at the bar. You can call ahead at 509-276-1882 and pick up your order at the turn. In winter, Divot’s closes to the public and serves a limited menu to simulator guests.

Seniors 62 and over pay $45 and $30, and juniors 17 and under pay $18 and $14. The afternoon special after 2:30 p.m. is $45 for adults and seniors. Power carts are $22 per rider for 18 holes and $11 for 9. The club notes that twilight rates and specials change by season, and in early October the online tee sheet was showing $40 for 18 holes and $30 for 9, with carts at $20 and $10.

Book through the Deer Park Golf Club online tee sheet, which opens seven days ahead, or call the pro shop at 509-276-5912. Children under 12 must play with an adult. The course closes for winter and reopens in spring; call the pro shop for conditions in the shoulder months.

Deer Park is lake country, too. Our guide to lakes near Spokane for kayaking and fishing covers Deer Lake, Loon Lake and the Horseshoe Lake boat ramp in Deer Park. For a second round, Downriver Golf Course in Spokane is about 20 miles south.

How to Score Here

  • Check the wind before every club choice. Holes 6 and 9 often play into the prevailing wind and run longer than the card says.
  • Take enough club on holes 4, 8 and 13, where the tee shot crosses water, and aim for the center of the green.
  • Play the signature 14th for position. A drive that stays right of the creek sets up the approach to a pond guarded green.

Final Word

Deer Park Golf Club pairs a wind exposed par 72 and its water holes with a grass range and a clubhouse grill, for $50 or less.
