The Milk House Coffee Co

Walt's Milk House opened on 44th Street just east of the Totem Diner in April 1960 and sold milk from that spot for sixty one years. Heather and Michael Wallace, who live in Everett's Glacier View neighborhood, bought the building in 2020 to fulfill a longstanding plan and reopened it as a coffee stand around the first of April 2021. The name stayed, which is the whole point.

They pour Velton's Coffee, roasted a few minutes away in Lowell, so the beans do not travel far to get here. Bagels come from the Whidbey Island Bagel Factory. It is a drive up window rather than a room to sit in, which suits a building that was never a cafe in the first place.

The remodel is the part worth knowing about, because the Wallaces built it out of salvage and local trades rather than a catalog. The countertop is made from old bowling alley lanes. The bike rack came off the former downtown YMCA. There is a large roll up door from Overhead Door Company and cabinets by Lund Cabinets. None of that shows from the drive through lane, but it is why this reads as a restoration rather than a coffee stand in an old shell.

Three outlets covered the reopening in 2021, My Everett News, The Daily Herald and KING 5, all of them leading with the history rather than the coffee. That tells you what the draw is. If you are the sort of traveler who detours for a building with a story, this is a five minute stop that pays for itself. Confirm the hours first, because a small drive through keeps its own schedule.
