Ebony and Ivory Coffee

Ebony and Ivory runs three levels at the corner of the Pacific Plaza building on Broadway, two blocks from the UW Tacoma campus. The first floor is the largest, with tables in a range of sizes, couches scattered through it and long white sheer curtains dividing the window sections. The second floor is an event room seating about thirty. The third is a balcony with a black piano and a large couch against the wall.

The drinks are named after songs and grouped as the Arpeggio Series: Sweet Caroline, Kiss From a Rose, Ebony and Ivory, Raspberry Beret and Dirty Diana. The energy drinks follow the same idea with Purple Rain and Superstition. There is a flight called Stairway to Heaven that runs a latte, a doppio con panna, a cold brew and a caramel macchiato.

Seasonal drinks rotate through and the Tacoma Fog is the one carrying a local name. Kennon and Kenzie Maurer founded the business in Lacey in 2021 and now run three locations, Lacey, Federal Way and this one. No source names their roaster, so this entry does not name one.

The hours carry an oddity worth planning around: weekdays run 7am to 5pm and Sunday 8am to 5pm, but Saturday stays open until 8pm. Nothing published explains it, though the space is programmed heavily as a venue, with art markets, poetry readings and writer meetups documented by the Tacoma Ledger. There is no food menu, and the non coffee side runs chai, tea lattes, London fogs, Italian sodas and a full tea list.
