Brewed Awakening

Brewed Awakening opens at 4:30am Monday through Saturday and 4:45am on Sunday, which puts it hours ahead of every sit down cafe in Bellingham and makes it the realistic option for anyone working a shift that starts before daylight. On the east side of town, off Iowa Street, that is a genuine service rather than a quirk.

It is a window, not a room. There is nowhere to sit and that is the design, not a shortcoming. The trade for giving up a table is that you are in and out in the time it takes to make the drink, which is the entire proposition of a Washington espresso stand.

The detail that separates it from the rest of the format is the syrups. Brewed Awakening makes its own rather than pouring from the standard commercial bottles, which is unusual at a drive through and is the kind of thing you taste in a flavored latte whether or not you knew to look for it. It is locally owned.

Sudden Valley, Alabama Hill and Whatcom Falls all lay some claim to it depending on who is describing the neighborhood. One honest caveat: sources disagree on when it closes, so treat this as a morning stop and do not drive across town in the afternoon on the strength of a posted time.
