Ballard, Seattle, Washington
A pale blue cottage on 15th Avenue NW where the biscuit is the reason to stop: buttermilk biscuits plain, under sausage gravy or built into breakfast sandwiches, served on a full menu from 7am to 3pm every day, with picnic tables out front.
Order a biscuit. The menu is built around a buttermilk biscuit, sold on its own, smothered in sausage gravy, or as the Ballard Breakfast Sandwich with bacon, egg and cheddar, and the Ballard Turkey stacks oven roasted turkey and cranberry sauce on the same base. The shop's site says the full menu runs all day, so a biscuit at 2:30pm is fair game. The address has a biscuit history: Intentionalist says this cafe took over the former Biscuit and Bean.
The coffee side is a straightforward espresso bar: latte, cappuccino, cortado, macchiato, mocha and americano, plus drip, cold brew, chai and Italian sodas. A seasonal specials board by the register has run flavored lattes such as honey lavender, pistachio and snickerdoodle. The shop does not name its roaster and we could not confirm one, so ask at the counter if it matters to you.
Beyond biscuits there are English muffin sandwiches, a Spicy Egg Panini, a BLT, a grilled cheese and a Garden Balsamic, with Grand Central sourdough on several sandwiches and dressings and croutons the menu calls house made. The pastry case runs to cinnamon rolls, blueberry muffins, raspberry scones and chocolate chip cookies, and Intentionalist calls the cinnamon rolls gigantic.
Seating is limited. The building is a small single story cottage with picnic tables on the front lawn, and Intentionalist also lists a drive through at the back and says weekends get busy, so come early. Hours are 7am to 3pm every day. Plan on street parking nearby.
