The building at 807 Commercial Avenue spent four decades as a funeral home. Groven Mortuary was here by the mid thirties, Harry D. Jackson ran the Jackson Funeral Home through the fifties, and Bryson Engdahl Mortuary followed until 1977. Village Pizza turned it into a restaurant, and the Field family have run it for years since.
The dough is made fresh every morning. The Village Idiot carries six meats, the Mandarin Island sends canadian bacon and pineapple in with mandarin oranges, and the premium topping list includes oysters, shrimp and anchovies. Small pizzas can be built on a gluten free crust, and there are eight inch minis, including one made with peanut butter and jelly.
Next door is the Wheelhouse Bar, hung with a hundred captioned photographs of Anacortes maritime history over a teak and holly bar top. An upstairs banquet room seats up to a hundred.
