Pioneer Coffee Roasting Co.

Chris Madsen started roasting in downtown Cle Elum in 2001, and Pioneer is still the Madsen family's business, run with JoAnna Madsen and described by the company as three generations deep. The roasting is small batch, done at 1,900 feet, and runs the full range from a light city roast to a dark French roast. Wholesale accounts around the region carry the beans, and the company also sells a white coffee and a nitro brew under its own name.

The cafe at 121 North Pennsylvania Avenue is the original storefront. A second location at 901 West 1st Street is a drive through, which is the one to know if you are coming off Interstate 90 with a car full of people and hiking boots.

The bakery is the other half of the reason to stop. Everything is made from scratch and baked on site daily: scones, cinnamon rolls, plain and pesto croissants, raspberry scones, breakfast burritos, quiche and cookies. That makes it the natural stop before the Coal Mines Trail or any of the hiking corridors north of town.
