Lander Coffee

Dusty and Alicia Johnson opened Lander in August 2019, two years after they started State Street Beer Co., and the coffee side has the same small scale as the beer. Beans are roasted in the back of the shop on what the owners describe as a modest machine, online orders are roasted on Tuesdays and shipped Wednesdays, and the cafe pours espresso, drip and a short list of teas with pastries.

The drink that gets talked about is the nitro cold brew. In 2025 it became the base for a Tacoma Beer Week collaboration with Logan Brewing, a black IPA called No Bad Time, which is the kind of thing that happens when a coffee roaster and a brewer share owners.

The Johnsons opened a third business in late December 2024, Wily Cycleworks on 6th Avenue, a bike shop with a cafe that serves Lander's roasts. The North 21st Street shop itself is small and bright, with a minimal look and limited seating, so it suits a cup and a conversation more than a laptop afternoon.
