Joyworks

Joyworks has anchored the corner of First Street and Avenue A since about 1979, which makes it one of the longest running independents in downtown Snohomish. Clarice Johnson opened it, and by the time the Everett Herald profiled the shop in 2004 her daughter Jana Johnson-Label was running it alongside her. It marked thirty five years in business in 2014.

It is bigger inside than the frontage suggests. The Herald put it at five thousand square feet spread across three connected storefronts and a second level, which is why the shop can carry what it does: gifts, home decor, clothing, scarves, ornaments and seasonal decorations, arranged by color and theme rather than by category. It began as mostly floral arrangements and grew into a general gift and clothing boutique, and the founder's own summary of the pricing has held up for twenty years: lots of little affordable things.

Open 10 AM to 5:30 PM Monday through Saturday and noon to 5 PM on Sunday. Christmas is when the shop is at its most itself, so expect it busy from late November.
