Pioneer Square, Seattle, WashingtonNorthwest Region
Phil Bevis's Pioneer Square bookshop, in a 1900 former brewery building on First Avenue South since 2021, selling new, used and antiquarian books alongside titles from Chatwin Books, the store's affiliated press.
Phil Bevis founded Arundel Books in Los Angeles in 1984 as a fine press publisher focused on art and poetry, began selling rare and out of print books in 1987, and later added new books. He opened a Seattle store in 1995, and the Los Angeles shop eventually closed after 25 years. In February 2021 Arundel moved into a larger Pioneer Square home at 322 First Avenue South, a building from 1900 that first housed the Capitol Brewing and Malting Company, later the Olympia Brewing Company, and for decades the Flury and Co. gallery.
The shelves mix new, used and antiquarian books with artwork by local artists, and The Seattle Times points visitors to its local travel guides and serious literature. Bevis also publishes through Chatwin Books, the affiliated press that grew out of the store, and the business offers digital printing, book binding and a vintage letterpress. In March 2026 the Book Club of Washington held a bookstore social in the shop, inviting members to browse the shelves and mingle.
