Tieton, Washington sits on a bench above the Naches and Tieton rivers, about 30 minutes northwest of Yakima, surrounded by apple and cherry orchards. Most people drive past it on the way to White Pass. The ones who turn off find a town square ringed by working art studios, a gallery that funds the local food bank, a Salvadoran pupusa counter, a Mexican bakery, a brewery and a chef driven dinner spot, all within a few blocks.

The town exists because of water. The Tieton Irrigation Project delivered water to this high ground around 1910 and 1911, and the orchards followed. A rail line hauled fruit out from 1917 until 1984, and Tieton incorporated as a town in 1942. The name comes from the Tieton River, a name with roots in the Taitnapam language of the people who lived along these rivers long before the orchards.

In 2005, Seattle publisher Ed Marquand and Mike Longyear started buying the empty fruit warehouses and storefronts around the square and turned them into studios, galleries and event space under the name Mighty Tieton. Two decades later the arts scene and the orchard town live side by side. The 2020 census counted 1,389 people. The state estimated 1,685 in 2026, and on a Saturday it can feel like most of them are on the square.

Getting Here

Driving to Tieton from Seattle

Tieton is about 158 miles from Seattle, a little over three hours by car. Take I-90 east over Snoqualmie Pass to Ellensburg, I-82 south to Yakima, then US 12 west toward Naches. Turn off onto Naches Tieton Road and climb onto the bench to town. In winter, check Snoqualmie Pass conditions before you leave.

From Yakima, Ellensburg and Wenatchee

From downtown Yakima it is about 18 miles and 30 minutes by US 12 and Naches Tieton Road. Locals also come in from the south on Summitview Road through the orchards, which is the prettier drive. Ellensburg is about 51 miles and just over an hour away. Wenatchee is about 122 miles and two and a half hours. Naches is less than 5 miles down the hill.

Getting Around Town

Everything in the town core is walkable. The square, Boxx Gallery, Nomad, Nikki’s Cafe, Don Mateo, Fernando’s and Santos Bakery are all within a few blocks of Maple Street and Wisconsin Avenue. Park once and walk. You need the car for Tieton Farm & Creamery on Summitview Road and for the Cowiche Canyon trailheads.

Day Trips

Yakima: Wine, Breweries and a Bigger Downtown

Naches Valley and Cot’s Peak Coffee

Naches is less than five miles down the hill. Stop for coffee at Cot’s Peak on the way in or out, which we wrote up in Visiting Cot’s Peak Coffee in Naches, and use our Naches Valley hub to plan the rest.

The Tieton River and White Pass

US 12 climbs from Naches along the Tieton River toward Rimrock Lake and White Pass. Every September the dam release turns the Tieton into one of the best whitewater runs in the state, with trips from outfitters like Blue Sky, Wet Planet and River Recreation. In winter, White Pass is the nearest ski area.

Oak Creek Elk Feeding

From about late December through the snowy months, the state feeds elk at the Oak Creek Wildlife Area near the junction of US 12 and SR 410, daily at 1:30 PM. Guided truck tours run during the feeding season, and the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife recommends reserving a day ahead.

Planning Your Visit

Go on a Saturday

Tieton is a small town and most businesses keep short hours. Saturday is the day nearly everything is open: the Mighty Tieton studio tour, Boxx Gallery, El Jefe pickup, the farm stand in season and Shorthead’s taproom. Friday works too. Monday and Tuesday are quiet, so do not plan a visit around them.

Best Seasons

Late spring through fall is the easiest time, when the orchards are green or in fruit and the trails at Cowiche Canyon are dry. Summer days get hot on the bench, so hike early. Late October brings Día de los Muertos, and December brings the holiday bazaar.

How Long to Stay

A half day covers the square, the mosaics and a meal. Stay overnight at El Nido or Elm Street Studio to fit in a Saturday studio tour, dinner at Nomad and a morning hike at Cowiche Canyon.

Practical Tips for a Tieton Day

Small businesses here change hours with the seasons, so check each one before you drive up, especially in winter. Bring cash for the farm stand and the studio tour donation. Cell service is fine in town but thins out quickly up US 12 toward Rimrock Lake. If you are hiking Cowiche Canyon in summer, carry more water than you think you need, start early and watch for rattlesnakes on the rocky sections. Tieton is a working town as well as an arts town: orchard crews start early, the laundromat and the pupusa counter are for locals first, and the best visits are the ones that spend money at the small places on the square.

Winter Visits

Winter is quiet in Tieton, but it is not closed. December brings the Holiday Craft and Antique Bazaar, and Candlelight string concerts fill the Mighty Tieton Warehouse on December 19, January 16 and February 13. Combine a winter visit with the elk feeding at Oak Creek or a ski day at White Pass, and check pass conditions on US 12 and Snoqualmie Pass before you go.
