Wide Awake Cafe and Espresso Ruston Way

For over a year this was the empty building everyone walked past. It belongs to Metro Parks Tacoma, sat on the water side of Ruston Way near Les Davis Pier, and had been a Hawaiian food operation until that closed at the end of 2023. Wide Awake won it through a city process in November 2024, painted it a moody slate, and opened on 11 February 2025. It is a walk up window on a promenade, so there is no lane and no room: you order, you take it, you keep walking.

The espresso is Dillanos out of Sumner, the same beans the company pours at its other two shops. Dillanos turns up repeatedly in this directory, including at Anthem and behind the owner of Campfire Coffee, who learned to roast there. Two drinks the owner named to the News Tribune when the shack opened were a hot brown butter snickerdoodle and a hot caramel brulee crunch, both seasonal builds rather than fixtures.

The food is bought in from named local kitchens rather than made here. Pastries come from Art of Crunch, breakfast and lunch sandwiches from Memoranda Kitchen, and bagels from Blazing Bagels, split with cream cheese or built into a sandwich. Memoranda also supplies Cafe Bostwick and Common Ground, both of which have their own entries.

Hours are 6am to 5pm daily, 7am on Saturday. The point of this one is where it is rather than what it is: Commencement Bay in front of you, the promenade running both directions, and parking along Ruston Way that fills on any warm afternoon. At 52 reviews it has far less of a record than the other Wide Awakes, which is a function of its age rather than anything else.
