Hasel Cafe

Hasel is a Turkish bakery first and a coffee shop second, and the pastry case is where that shows. Three kinds of borek sit next to baklava, Turkish delight, mussel cookies and a San Sebastian cheesecake, and the tres leches comes in raspberry, pistachio and caramel. Almond apple cinnamon cookies, honey cake and an eclair round out a case that runs longer than most cafes in the Renton Highlands attempt.

Breakfast runs 8 AM to 2 PM and is a sit down affair rather than a pastry and go. The Turkish end of it is cilbir, poached eggs served over garlicky yogurt, and shakshuka. The rest is what you want from a full morning menu: an American breakfast plate, a veggie omelette, avocado toast, a smoked salmon croissant, yogurt and acai bowls.

The drink board leans the same direction without going the whole way. Turkish coffee is on the hot list beside a cortado and a cappuccino, and the rose latte, served hot or iced, is the one that sounds least like everywhere else. An iced Spanish latte and a strawberry matcha cover the sweeter half.

The room is small, plant filled and built to sit in, with free wifi, step free access and a welcome for dogs. It stays open until 8 PM six nights a week, which makes it one of the few places in the Highlands where you can still get a table and a coffee after dinner. Mondays it closes at 7.
