Maryhill Museum of Art

Maryhill Museum of Art sits on a bluff above the Columbia River in Klickitat County, housed in a Beaux Arts mansion that entrepreneur Sam Hill originally built as his home. Queen Marie of Romania dedicated the building in 1926, and it opened to the public as a museum in 1940. The permanent collection ranges widely, from Auguste Rodin sculptures and watercolors to the Theatre de la Mode fashion mannequins created in France after World War II, along with Native American art, Orthodox icons, antique chess sets, and the royal belongings of Queen Marie herself. Outside, the grounds spread across more than 5,300 acres with outdoor sculpture, picnic tables, and sweeping views toward Mount Hood, while the full size Stonehenge replica that Sam Hill raised as a World War I memorial stands a few miles east.
