About This Course: Auburn’s city course on the Green River

Auburn Golf Course is the City of Auburn’s public eighteen, a par 71 on Green River Road SE that starts up on a hillside and finishes on the valley floor beside the Green River. It plays 6,314 yards from the Blue tees and hosts more than 50,000 rounds a year.

Expect a pro shop, rental carts and clubs, group lessons, busy evening leagues and Bogey’s Public House in the clubhouse. Two things to know: the course lists no driving range, and the posted rate sheet covers May through September only.

Course Overview

In February 1948 a group of Auburn residents, many of them World War II veterans, held the first public meeting of the Green River Golf and Country Club. According to the course’s history page, that club built the first nine hole course open to the public in south King County, on land that once grew hops. The City of Auburn bought it at the end of the 1960s, added former state land to reach 18 holes and reopened it in 1970 as Auburn Municipal Golf Course. The clubhouse, with a 150 seat banquet room and 110 seat restaurant, dates from 2007.

The first four holes sit 250 to 400 feet above sea level, and most of the round plays near the river at about 50 feet. The course has rebuilt nine fairways, 15 greens and 17 tee boxes over the years, and you will find more than 20 bunkers, two ponds with fountains and a waterfall behind the 16th green. The front nine is par 35, the back par 36. At 6,314 yards and a men’s slope of 122, it is a fair test that does not overwhelm newer golfers.

Hole by Hole Highlights

Yardages are from the Blue tees; handicap ranks are the men’s, from the course scorecard.

  • Hole 1, 380 yards, par 4: A straight, tree lined opener with a slightly uphill second shot. Third on the handicap, so bogey is no disaster.
  • Hole 4, 217 yards, par 3: The longest par 3, with a large two tier green. Take plenty of club when the pin is back.
  • Hole 6, 417 yards, par 4: The longest par 4 and the number one handicap hole, with out of bounds left, two fairway bunkers right and a deep bunker by the back right tier.
  • Hole 9, 482 yards, par 5: Short but troublesome. A large maple blocks big hitters, and a pond guards the front and left of the green, so most players lay up.
  • Hole 10, 515 yards, par 5: The longest hole on the course, a slight dogleg left with a wide, tree lined fairway.
  • Hole 15, 366 yards, par 4: The “cliff hole,” a sharp dogleg right with a drop of more than 60 feet from tee to fairway and two bunkers at the corner. Club down.
  • Hole 16, 175 yards, par 3: The signature hole: a waterfall behind the green, a bunker right and water front and left. Play for the middle.
  • Hole 18, 373 yards, par 4: The second handicap hole, with bunkers on both sides of the fairway and water right of the landing area and left and front of the green.

Amenities and Practice

The pro shop rents power carts at $21 per seat for 18 holes and $13 for 9, premium clubs at $36 and $24, and push carts at $7 and $4. Group lessons for youth 8 to 14, adults 15 and over and seniors 50 and over run in spring and summer, starting in May; register through Auburn @ Play or at 253-931-3043, and call the pro shop for private lessons.

The course website lists no driving range, the rate sheet sells no range buckets, and the Washington Golf course profile marks it as having none. To hit balls first, Riverbend Golf Complex in Kent, about four miles away, has a driving range. In season, the Merchants League plays Mondays, the Couples League most Sundays, and there is a casual Summer Fun League and a PGA Jr. League for kids.

Food and Drink

Bogey’s Public House runs the dining and catering, and it welcomes golfers and non golfers alike. Its own site promises local craft beers, handcrafted cocktails and American pub fare, with lunch and dinner daily and breakfast on weekends. It also caters tournaments; call 253-876-1957.

How to Score Here

  • Survive the hillside start: hole 1 ranks third on the handicap and hole 4 is a 217 yard par 3.
  • Lay up short of the pond on 9, as the course itself advises.
  • Club down on 15, then aim for the middle of the green on 16.
  • Stay below the hole on 5 and 13; the course warns that putts from above run fast.

Final Word

Auburn Golf Course is a busy, fairly priced city course with roots in 1948, a waterfall on 16 and a pub waiting after the round.
