Two Mountain Winery takes its name from the view behind Copeland Vineyard, where Mount Adams and Mount Rainier both rise over the Rattlesnake Hills. The land has been in the family since 1951, when grandfather Phil Schmidt planted Schmidt Orchards. Brothers Matt and Patrick Rawn planted the vineyard with their uncle Ron Schmidt in 2000, made the first vintage in 2002 and bought the winery in 2006. Copeland Vineyard carries their grandmother's name, Gladys Copeland Schmidt.
Matt makes the wine and Patrick runs the vineyards, more than 200 acres across blocks with names like Copeland, Marcela, Hilltop and Mary Evelyn, and every bottle comes from estate fruit. In 2020 they became the first growers in Washington certified under RULES for Sustainable Winegrowing. The lineup runs from Chardonnay, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc and rosé to Lemberger, Merlot, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and a Cabernet Franc Reserve, along with the Show Pony red blend and a sparkling pét nat. Great Northwest Wine rated the 2017 Copeland Vineyard Merlot outstanding.
The tasting room sits in a working winery with vines right outside, and kids and dogs are welcome. Reservations are encouraged but not required. Tastings happen at the bar, there are outdoor tables for lingering, and the tasting fee is waived with a two bottle purchase. Food is picnic style, cheese, sausage and baguettes, with the occasional food truck, and select Saturdays bring a Brothers Reserve tasting.
