Hayday Bake and Brew

Waquar and Fatima Sheikh met at a bakery in 1980, while they were in college, and spent the next four decades meaning to open one. Fatima left teaching in 2003 for the bakery program at Renton Technical College and worked a North Bend bakery on and off for fifteen years. Waquar came out of international finance and teaches it now at Central Washington University.

Their building dates to 1889 and has been a coffee roastery and a woodworking shop in its time. They bought it in August 2019, spent five months rebuilding the kitchen and raising a new staircase, and opened that January. Wilson Creek runs along the back.

Fatima bakes the pies, tarts, cookies and pastries. Thumbprint cookies and Russian tea cakes were the first favorites, and baklava, key lime pie and hummingbird cake followed. Espresso, wine, beer and cider are all poured. Waquar calls it neither lunch nor dinner but something in between, at any hour you like.
