Fremont, Seattle, Washington
A coffee house in an actual 1904 house on North 36th Street, open since 2003, with a wraparound porch, small rooms of mixed seating and coffee the company roasts itself. Big breakfast burritos and grilled ciabatta sandwiches, plus beer, cider and wine.
Fremont Coffee Company has run out of a historic house on North 36th Street since 2003, its own site says, and the house has a documented story of its own. In March 2014 the Queen Anne News traced it back through original plans drawn as a residence for Frank Rosche of Pacific Coast Timber, a sale to B.F. Hurst in 1930 and on to the Church family in 1935. The building's owner had hung a sign calling it the Church House until a descendant of that family pointed out the mistake. In 2014 the cafe went by Sophia's Fremont Coffee and operated in the front of the house.
The company roasts its own coffee, its site says, though it does not say where the roaster sits, so do not plan on watching a batch. The drink menu is a straight espresso bar of Americano, latte, cappuccino, mocha, cortado and macchiato, every one a double shot, plus brewed coffee with $1 refills, cold brew, a matcha tea latte and Italian sodas, with almond, hemp, oat, soy and coconut milk for 75 cents.
Food goes well past a pastry case. The Big Breakfast Burrito wraps bacon or Morningstar Farms vegetarian sausage with egg, spinach, cheddar and red potatoes in a 12 inch La Mexicana tortilla, and the bacon burrito bowl is gluten free. Lunch is grilled ciabatta: a turkey pesto, a Cubano with ham, bacon and dill pickles, and a provolone and cheddar grilled cheese on sourdough.
The house is the reason to stay. The site describes a wraparound porch and small rooms, and The Infatuation in 2017 found a mix of seating and carpets plus free wifi; that review is old enough to ask about the wifi before settling in. Hours are 6am to 6pm on weekdays and 7am to 6pm on weekends.
