Maple Leaf, Seattle, Washington
Jill Killen opened this Maple Leaf corner cafe in 2002, and the neighborhood calls it the town hall of Maple Leaf. The coffee is her own, roasted in Georgetown, served with breakfast, lunch, coconut bread and a kids nook stocked with toys and books.
Cloud City sits at 8801 Roosevelt Way NE, and its own site says it is often called the town hall of Maple Leaf. Seattle Refined visited in May 2022 and found the proof: community groups meet in the cafe, the bathroom is open to neighbors, and a converted phone booth attached to the building works as a little free pantry stocked with hygiene items and socks.
The coffee is Killen's own. She became a certified Q Grader through the Coffee Quality Institute in 2017 and started roasting in 2019, and the company says it roasts in Georgetown on Wednesdays and Thursdays and ships the same day. Its Ethiopia Lecho Torka Fully Washed won a Good Food Award in 2022. The bar runs the Cloud City Blend, the El Diablo Blend, a decaf blend and a rotating single origin, and the El Diablo name comes from the Queen Anne cafe Killen bought in 2012, which closed on March 17, 2020.
Seattle Refined called the coconut bread the most popular item, and the menu covers drip, espresso drinks, pastries, sandwiches and a long list of vegan options. The kids nook has toys and books, and in 2022 the outdoor seating was being turned into a permanent heated structure. The company site lists self serve coffee at $2.
Google lists 7am to 4pm daily, and the cafe's own pages do not post hours, so check before an afternoon run. Pickup orders go through the cafe's own online ordering site, and special bakery and catering orders go through Toast. The company also sells its beans online.
