East Hill, Kent, Washington
Turkish coffee heated in a tray of sand and poured from a brass pot, with kunefe, baklava and a full Turkish breakfast on the side. A family owned cafe on 104th Avenue Southeast on Kent's East Hill.
Turkish Coffee House calls itself a family owned and operated Turkish cafe, and its own website shows the centerpiece of the menu made the traditional way: a small pot set into a heated tray of sand, then poured from a silver brass pot into the cup. Plain Turkish coffee leads the drink menu, with a milk version and a Pistachio Turkish Coffee beside it, and Turkish tea arrives in a small glass.
The rest of the drink list covers espresso basics, from an Americano to caramel macchiatos, plus a cold cappuccino garnished with dried rosebuds, a Rose Latte, and a San Sebastian Cheesecake Latte that the menu describes as a coffee take on the cafe's cheesecake, finished with pistachio topped foam. Teas run from apple, mint and pomegranate to Bimbir Gece, by the glass or by the pot, and ayran, the lightly salted Turkish yogurt drink, sits on the cold list. The site does not name a coffee roaster; the only sourcing it mentions is matcha from Japan.
The food menu is a full one. Breakfast runs from simit and a Simit Breakfast Plate to menemen, kuymak and a sucuk panini; gozleme comes with spinach and cheese or with meat; and pide comes with cheese, vegetables or sucuk. Dessert is kunefe and a long baklava list, including rolled pistachio and walnut, triangle pistachio and a cold milky pistachio baklava. The site says the meats are halal. Photos on the Google listing show a bright white room with arched wall niches, long wood tables and a dessert case by the counter.
Google lists the hours as 9am to 5pm daily, but the shop's own website still shows a Ramadan schedule with later closes Friday through Sunday and says it is closed on Tuesdays, so call ahead before a Tuesday visit. Reservations, private parties and catering are all offered through the site, and Google lists an accessible entrance, restroom and seating.
