East Campus, Federal Way, Washington
A glass walled cafe off Weyerhaeuser Way South with a fireplace, long shared work tables and a patio, from the Lacey couple behind Ebony and Ivory. The monthly flight of four themed drinks on a wooden paddle is the order to share.
Kennon and Kenzie Maurer opened this Federal Way location on July 18, 2022, the second after their original shop in Lacey, and the Federal Way Mirror reported that the grand opening slipped from July 1 because of trouble with the espresso machine. Kennon told the paper the goal was a place where people could be a community and get away from the office. A later South Sound Magazine profile noted that each of their shops sits inside a building shared with other businesses, which brings in nearby workers, and a third location has since opened on Broadway in Tacoma.
The name works on two levels, according to the Mirror: the black and white keys of a piano, since Kennon is a pianist, and the couple themselves, an interracial couple who took their motto from the 1982 Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder song. When this shop opened in 2022, that motto, Together in Perfect Harmony, glowed on a neon sign inside. The drinks keep the musical streak. South Sound Magazine named the Dirty Diana, a vanilla chai with oat milk, and the Ebony and Ivory, a dark and white mocha, as the owners' favorites, and the monthly flights release four themed sampler drinks at a time. No source we found names the roaster.
Photos on the shop's Google listing show the setting: a pavilion of floor to ceiling glass under a wood soffit, a fireplace set into a wall of warm wood slats, long shared tables where people work on laptops, and a patio of metal tables and chairs beside a lawn. One photo also shows a glass walled room raised on posts above the patio. A sandwich on rustic bread and a flight paddle with a Harvest Moon card appear in the same gallery.
Hours are 7am to 5pm on weekdays and 8am to 3pm on Saturday and Sunday. Google lists outdoor seating and an accessible entrance, restroom and seating. This is a separate building from the three level Tacoma shop on Broadway, so the balcony with the black piano is a Tacoma feature.
