Lake Chelan is a glacially carved fjord lake in north-central Washington, 55 miles long and 1,486 feet deep, making it one of the deepest lakes in the United States. The town of Chelan sits at the southern tip where the lake drains into the Chelan River and then the Columbia. It is 38 miles north of Wenatchee and about three hours from Seattle, far enough to feel like a real trip and close enough that people make it on a Friday afternoon.

The lake draws two distinct crowds. The first comes for water: the Chelan basin averages more than 300 days of sunshine per year, the lake warms to swimable temperatures by late June, and the combination of jet skis, houseboats, paddleboards, and boat launches means summer is consistently busy from the Fourth of July through Labor Day. The second crowd comes for wine: the Lake Chelan American Viticultural Area has more than 30 wineries concentrated in the benchlands above the lake and in the Manson community 10 miles northwest.

At the far northern end of the lake, reachable only by boat or floatplane, is Stehekin: a community of about 75 year-round residents at the edge of the North Cascades with no road connection to the outside world. The Lady of the Lake ferry makes the run from Chelan daily in summer. It is one of the more unusual day trips in Washington.

Getting Here

From Seattle, Lake Chelan is about 3 hours via two routes. The most direct is US-2 east over Stevens Pass to Wenatchee, then north on US-97 Alt for 38 miles to Chelan. The more scenic option follows SR-20 over Washington Pass to Twisp, then south on SR-153 through the Methow Valley to Pateros and north on US-97. SR-20 closes from mid-November through late April. Check WSDOT conditions before using that route in shoulder seasons.

From Spokane, head west on US-2 to Wenatchee, then north on US-97 Alt to Chelan. Budget approximately 3.5 hours.

Chelan is a compact town. The downtown waterfront, Don Morse Park, and Campbell’s Resort are all walkable from each other. A car is necessary for reaching wineries above the lake, Manson, the state parks on the north shore, and the trailhead at Chelan Butte. Parking downtown is free and generally available outside of peak summer weekends.

Festivals & Events

April

Spring Barrel Tasting

The format mirrors Walla Walla's release weekends and is one of the best times to visit the benchland wineries before summer crowds arrive. [VERIFY: current year dates at lakechelanwine.com]

June

Lake Chelan Crush Marathon

A point-to-point marathon and half marathon run along the lakeshore each June, drawing runners from across the Pacific Northwest for a course that combines lake views with the rolling benchland terrain. The race finishes in downtown Chelan. [VERIFY: current year dates and registration at lakechelancrush.com]

July

Lake Chelan Bach Fest

An annual classical music festival held over a long weekend in July, bringing professional musicians to perform Bach and baroque repertoire in winery settings and downtown venues across the Chelan Valley. One of the more distinctive cultural events in north-central Washington. [VERIFY: current year dates at lakechelanbachfest.org]

October

Harvest Crush

The fall counterpart to Spring Barrel Tasting, celebrating the grape harvest with winery events, food and wine pairings, and the harvest crush experience at participating estates. October is when the benchlands shift to fall color and the crowds thin from peak summer levels, making this one of the best combinations of timing and experience at Lake Chelan. Day Trips

Stehekin (55 miles northwest, by boat only): The Lady of the Lake ferry departs Chelan daily in summer and makes the full 55-mile run to Stehekin in about 4 hours, with a shorter option stopping at Fields Point Landing. Stehekin has a bakery, a handful of lodges, a National Park Service visitor center, and hiking access into the Glacier Peak Wilderness. A day trip is tight but feasible; an overnight is the way to do it properly. Check current schedules and book ahead at ladyofthelake.com.

Manson (10 miles northwest): The smaller community at the northwest end of the lake has its own cluster of tasting rooms, Chelan Valley Farms for U-pick, and a quieter waterfront than downtown Chelan. Many of the benchland wineries are closer to Manson than to Chelan proper. A half-day loop through the Manson wine corridor covers more ground than a day in town.

Wenatchee (38 miles south via US-97 Alt): The largest city in north-central Washington makes a practical bookend if you are doing a multi-day loop. Apple orchards, the Columbia River waterfront, and the Ohme Gardens are the main draws. EWS hub at Wenatchee.

Planning Your Visit

Lake Chelan has two distinct seasons. Summer (late June through Labor Day) is hot, busy, and the reason most people visit. Book lodging three to six months ahead for July and August weekends. The Fourth of July weekend books earliest and brings large crowds. If you are coming for water activities, summer is non-negotiable. If you are coming for wine, spring and fall are more relaxed with better tasting room availability.

Spring (May and early June) is the underrated season: wildflowers on the hillsides, wineries open with new releases, and room rates significantly lower. The lake is cold for swimming but the surrounding terrain is at its greenest. Fall (September through October) brings harvest season at the wineries and warm enough afternoons for the lake.

Plan two nights minimum. One day for the lake and downtown, one day for wineries or a half-day ferry toward Stehekin. A third day opens the south shore state parks or a side trip to Manson. Budget well ahead for summer: Campbell’s Resort and the better vineyard accommodations book out months in advance.
