Fun Things To Do With Kids in Washington State

Traveling or exploring with kids means finding places that actually hold their attention, activities that do not wear out a parent, and experiences that create the kind of memories you are all still talking about years later. Washington State has more of those places than most families ever manage to find.

This section is where we gather everything we have found across the state that works well with kids in tow. You will find outdoor adventures, rainy day options, hands on museums, beaches that tolerate sand castle construction, trails short enough to hold a five year old’s attention, and small town spots that surprise everyone in the car. Every post is written by someone who has actually been there with family.

Washington is genuinely one of the best states for family travel. The range of terrain means you can find the right fit for any age group and any season. A toddler and a ten year old can both have a great time in the same place if you know where to look, and a lot of those places are within easy driving distance of anywhere in the state.

Browse recent posts below or use the county tags to find activities near where you are headed. If you are planning a trip with younger kids, the things to do guides for individual cities and towns are a good place to start.

Visiting the Yakima Area Arboretum
Madeline Wilson · June 6, 2024

As the weather begins to change and spring is upon us, it is finally time to stop being cooped up inside and spend some time in nature. After the extreme winter season, I am beyond ready to bask in the sun and enjoy the outdoors — especially at the Yakima Area Arboretum. With its claim...

Exploring Snoqualmie Falls with Kids
Mikaela Judd · June 5, 2024

I’ve been visiting Snoqualmie Falls since I was a little girl. It was (and still is) one of my mom’s go-to activities for out-of-town guests. The drive is beautiful and not too long (it’s just 32 minutes from Seattle with no traffic). Plus, the falls are breathtaking year-round.  Fluctuating with the seasons, the view is...

Visiting Mount St. Helens With Kids
Danielle Wood · June 3, 2024

Washington State has many amazing, beautiful places to visit, but none are quite as unique as Mount St. Helens. Before its eruption in 1980, Mount St. Helens stood tall and prominent in the western Washington sky. While not able to offer the same views today, Mount St. Helens still boasts extraordinary scenery and a landscape...

Family Fun in Olympia
Britt Board · March 16, 2024

I love Olympia the way we love a quirky aunt or an old t-shirt that’s well-loved but still the reigning favorite. Olympia is a little surprising and a lot weird. It’s the sort of community where it’s not out of place to find a 3-piece band wearing woodland creature masks (no really, that happened). The...
