The Seattle Art Museum, affectionately known to locals and enthusiasts as SAM, stands as a pillar in the art community of Seattle, Washington. This prestigious institution operates from three distinct facilities. The first is its primary museum, an architectural wonder located right in the bustling hub of downtown Seattle. A stone’s throw away in Volunteer Park, Capitol Hill, is the Seattle Asian Art Museum, dedicated to celebrating and showcasing the rich tapestry of Asian artistry. Finally, adding to the museum’s modern flair is the Olympic Sculpture Park, a waterfront marvel that opened its doors to the public in 2007, offering a harmonious blend of nature and contemporary art.
The Seattle Art Museum originally opened in 1933 with approximately 1,926 pieces. The museum now has a collection of over 25,00o pieces. SAM moved to the current location in December 1991. In 2006 the museum began to expand and now operates on four floors of the building. The museum also owns the next eight floors so expansion in the future is practical.
