Caution Elk Crossing

The Mountain Goat Coffee Company has been serving coffee and bakery items to locals and outdoor enthusiasts since 2005. One of our readers suggested that I check this one out.  I had some business in Thurston County one day so I decided it would be good to go home over White Pass and stop and check out Mountain Goat Coffee.

Packwood is known for having a lot of elk that roam through town on occasion. Random note: I had house for sale in Packwood once and counted 32 elk in the yard one time when I went to check on the house. For a city boy this was certainly a shock! There is also a lot of hiking, boating, cycling and all other manners of outdoor activities. Once you have coffee that is.

Mountain Goat Coffee Company Coffee Roaster

Micro Roasting Coffee

Mountain Goat Coffee Company roasts their own coffees on site. The coffee roaster is an air roaster by Sonofresco. Looks like the 2lb model. This means that they can roast around 50 pound of coffee a day. Given how busy the shop was I am guessing they keep the roaster quite busy. Of course, like always I missed the actual roasting process on my visit. One of these days I will time a visit to when coffee is being roasted.

On my visit I was welcomed by two friendly baristas who were happy to answer my questions. My standard order black coffee in a cup was quickly prepared and presented to me. I was drinking the Goat Rocks Blend which is an all Latin blend with tasting notes of sweet and fully bodied. The aroma was nice, and the coffee was very good. This was a big flavor of coffee. The coffee fit my flavor profile preferences nicely. Tasty Coffee. Check.

Good Coffee, Good People

The interior of Mountain Goat Coffee Company is warm and welcoming. I was able to sit at a table and enjoy my coffee. On this visit I did not grab something from the bakery. The pastries looked very good and I am sure that on my next visit I will enjoy something to eat with my coffee. There is also a covered outdoor seating area if you want to sit outside enjoying coffee and do a bit of elk watching. Comfortable space to enjoy coffee and have conversation. Check.

Mountain Goat Coffee Company Espresso Machine

There is a small gift section where you can pick up a Mountain Goats coffee mug, or perhaps some hand-crafted artwork. They have an interesting selection of clocks for sale that are quite fun to look at.

White Pass is a beautiful drive which I highly recommend you check out anytime of year. Now you know that you have a good place to get out and stretch your legs no matter if you are driving west towards Seattle or Portland or if you are heading east to Yakima. The Mountain Goat Coffee Company will help you stay awake with their great coffee!
