Welcome to Hops and Headz in Bellingham!
Cold beer. 30 different taps. Asian-fusion inspired wings. A huge outdoor area. And a smile when you walk in. Sound good? Come on in for a great experience in this Birchwood neighborhood taphouse!
Service and Selection
Let’s start with my favorite thing: customer service. As in all my previous reviews, you know this is super important to me. When you first walk into Hops and Headz, your eyes adjust to the lower light pretty quickly- and then you see the smile on the staff’s face. They welcome you in and offer advice on what beers or food you might want based on your individual taste. The conversation is key here- make sure you describe your personal preference so they can match it to a current beer on tap!
As I mentioned, there are 30 different beers on tap, so the selection is pretty diverse. Although there are many from the Pacific Northwest, you might find a beer from California or even the east coast mixed in there! Don’t hesitate to give something new a try; the staff is happy to offer up a taste so that you can really make sure what you buy is the one you want! Those 30 taps allow some freedom of movement to find good prices and good beer. They work closely with local breweries so they can offer some of that flavor as well!
Alright- time to dig in! How about some Asian-fusion inspired wings? I recommend you give the H&H Sauce a try. Although it is secret, I can tell you it has a Korean background, it’s spicy, and it’s completely delicious! Fair warning- it has heat people! Be prepared! It isn’t an over the top, can’t-stand-the-burn kind of heat, but you can certainly feel it! The menu has a wide selection of other items, and is also kid-friendly. Don’t miss out on everything they offer.
Care and Attention to Details
When I had the chance to sit with Rodney Chadwick, the Front of House Manager, he gave me a little insight into how his background inspired his work on the different wing sauces. He spent several years working for a Texas wing restaurant, and took that knowledge and then infused it with the chef to make over the top sauces! You won’t go wrong- trust me. He designed the sauces to make them bigger and better than anywhere else in town. Hops and Headz couldn’t offer sushi, so the replacement is a buffalo wing menu, with 12 sauces to choose from.
Rodney also focused on a big draw that sets Hops and Headz aside from the rest of the crowd: its outdoor space. The outdoor venue is one of the top places to get a beer and hang out, while playing miniature golf, cornhole or even just enjoying the small pond with bridge. There is plenty of ample seating out there, and with a newly remodeled conex box, you can get additional beer on draft without even having to go inside! Hops and Headz is a Birchwood local favorite, and during my visit, I had the opportunity to talk with a few of them. Every single one said they enjoy the beer variety and the customer service, as well as the different sports being played on the big screen televisions. I would wholeheartedly agree!
Music, Games and a Punch Card
In addition to all of the above, Hops and Headz has a few other things going for it. They recently introduced an old-school punch card, so that when you hit your 10th beer, you get a 10% discount! After you have had 30, you will receive the maximum 30% off your order! This bit of nostalgia goes along with the vast amount of board games and darts that can help you and some friends keep entertained while you are hanging out! Additionally, they offer ad-hoc trivia nights and tap takeovers. You can also find a wide variety of musical fun, including a sting quartet and even some punk bands!
Although my kids have long since gotten older, I really get a feel that the outdoor venue and kid’s menu is a place to bring your family and hang out in the back of the house, and yet the variety up front is the perfect adult setting. This neighborhood bar wants you to come in, see those 30 taps, a smile from the bartender, and be satisfied knowing that cold beer will go down well with this kind of atmosphere.
