Learn of Slovakian traditional & contemporary wireworking through Fulbright Scholar, Artist, Educator Kristin Tollefsons travels!

Learn about Slovakia and the rich tradition and contemporary practice of wireworking through the travels of Fulbright Scholar, artist, and educator Kristin Tollefson.

Artist and educator Kristin Tollefson traveled to Slovakia as a Fulbright Scholar, immersing herself in the rich tradition and contemporary practice of wireworking. During her five-month stay in Central Europe, she captured captivating images and garnered valuable experiences which she will share, revealing how this immersive period of learning significantly influenced her artistic work and personal life.

Wireworking, known as ‘drotárstvo’ in Slovak, is a tradition of tinkering that originated in the mountains of Slovakia bordering Czechia and Poland. In 2019, it earned the prestigious status of Intangible Heritage by UNESCO. With over 30 years of research and hands-on experience in wireworking, Tollefson’s journey led her to the city of Žilina in northern Slovakia, where she discovered the intrinsic qualities embedded within this practice and its implications for contemporary discussions in art and society.

Attendees are also invited to register for the Introduction to Sculptural Wireworking workshop on January 20, 1-4pm.
