Travelogue: Up Close and Personal with the Brown Bears of Katmai, Alaska
January 16 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Join Bellingham Parks & Recreation for a presentation with guest speaker Janice Carmichael in the Rotunda Room of Old City Hall.
Would you get off a boat in the wilds of Alaska and walk toward the largest bears in the world outside of polar bears, armed only with a camera and a guide? Knowing her love of wildlife photography, Janice’s husband prompted her to take this adventure with him and two close friends to the Katmai National Park and Wilderness Preserve. The Katmai Wilderness Lodge is located along a wild Alaskan coastline, on the opposite side of Katmai National Park from the more famous Brooks Falls. Isolated and remote, this little known gem offers rewards of a lifetime. As the Katmai coastal brown bears now sleep in hibernation, come see their photographs and hear the tales of their daily lives once they emerge from their winter dens. Fascinating, fun and entertaining, this is a bear talk you don’t want to miss.
Janice and her husband Bob have made Bellingham their home since 1984. Photography has been a life long hobby for Janice who believes photography can bring understanding to our world. Also a member of Toastmasters International, Janice loves to tell others first-hand stories about the bears and wildlife of Alaska.

The Whatcom Museum acknowledges that we gather on the traditional territory of the Lhaq’temish – Lummi People – and the Nuxwsá7aq – Nooksack People – who have lived in the Coast Salish region from time immemorial. The Museum honors our relationship with all of our Coast Salish neighbors and our shared responsibilities to their homeland where we all reside today.
