Mary Lou Kayser- The River Only Runs One Way

April 19 @ 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Welcome back local authors Mary Lou Kayser and Ryler Dustin to the Readings Gallery to celebrate Mary Lou Kayser’s newest book!

Award-winning poet Mary Lou Kayser shares this theme in her much-anticipated new collection of poems exploring our relationship to time, love, loss, and the changing natural world. You weren’t meant to travel unscathed, unscarred, fully intact. That’s not how this works. Kayser’s remarkable ability to take readers through the journey of a river as it makes its way to the sea offers insight into who we are in this world as it changes rapidly around us. From its headwaters to its mouth where both a triumphant ending and inspired beginning take place at once, a river — like poetry — has the power to heal and humble us. Tender, poignant, and self-reflective, The River Only Runs One Way encourages readers to reflect on and appreciate their own journeys, connecting the different parts of their lives for deeper meaning, self-compassion, and understanding.

MaryLou Kayser is a writer, creativity coach, and entrepreneur who helps people unlock their creative power and bring original ideas to life. With over 18 years as a solopreneur, she has written multiple books, produced hundreds of podcast episodes, and developed workshops, board games, and AI-powered tools that challenge conventional thinking.

A keen observer of human nature, MaryLou blends storytelling, strategy, and a deep understanding of personal transformation in her work. She thrives at the intersection of creativity and technology, showing professionals how to harness AI without losing their unique voice. Whether through her writing, coaching, or speaking, she empowers people to think differently, create boldly, and design the future on their own terms.

When she’s not writing or building, you’ll find her exploring music, championing the power of self-awareness, and helping others turn their creative sparks into lasting impact.

Ryler Dustin has represented Seattle on the final stage of the Individual World Poetry Slam and his poems appear in outlets like Verse Daily, Major Jackson’s The Slowdown, and The Best of Button Poetry. He is the author of Trailer Park Psalms from the University of Pittsburgh and Heavy Lead Birdsong from Write Bloody Publishing. He recently moved back to his hometown of Bellingham, Washington, with his wife and a dog he met while hiking.
